The City of Mason has a full-service, internationally accredited municipal police agency employing 42 full-time police officers, including the Chief of Police, Assistant Chief of Police, 7 sergeants, and 4 detectives.
The City of Mason Police Department has fourteen fully-equipped, marked police cruisers and several unmarked police cars. The department operates four community policing patrol districts to which officers are assigned for periods of 12 months or longer. The Mason Police Department operating budget is approximately $3 million.
AGENCY BACKGROUND
City of Mason police officers average eight years of professional police experience. The Chief of Police has a Masters Degree in Public Administration, twenty years of experience as a Chief and 10 years experience as a City Manager. The Assistant Chief holds a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice, is a certified law enforcement executive, a graduate of the FBI National Academy, a graduate of the Police Executive Leadership College, and a graduate of the Northwestern University Traffic Institute School of Police Staff and Command, where he received the Franklin Kreml Leadership Award. All of the sergeants are graduates of the Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, the Police Executive Leadership College, and/or other noted police management and leadership programs.
Officers hired by the City of Mason Police Department must successfully complete a comprehensive screening process, including a thorough background investigation, a polygraph, psychological screening, medical examination, fitness test, and drug screen. New officers must complete 17 weeks of state-mandated training and a 12-week City of Mason Police Field Training Program. The department has an in-service training program for all personnel that includes a tuition reimbursement program and an academic pay incentive to encourage officers to obtain baccalaureate and advanced degrees. Officers are required to qualify at least four times a year with on- and off-duty weapons, as well as additional training two times per year on an electronic firearms system that focuses on prudent decision-making in the use of force.
The Mason Police Department is a major partner in the Warren County Tactical Response Unit, a joint law enforcement initiative to handle high-profile, high-risk threats and acts of violence. |
